The Proposal
So believe it or not, the proposal date is a little vague! We were in Kenya for a month where time and washing yourself stops. I think it was about the 10th of July when we were staying in a safari park that it happened. We were going out with the students, teachers and guides to drive around the park for the afternoon wildlife spotting and counting to track animal movements before heading to sunset rock to watch, well, the sun set! When we got there, it was actually fairly overcast, but the guide asked Gary and I to go up the rock to scope it out before taking the students up. In any normal circumstance where lions can be a possibility, I definitely would have questioned this but nature was calling very loudly and all I saw at the time were the bushes up the top. Remember now that this was Africa and needs must! Anyway, going up the hill it did cross my mind that this was not much of a rock but more like a little grassy stump. I had no idea that at the top we’d be able to see as far as we could because everywhere around was so flat. It was pretty amazing. And then after that Gary said let's have a moment and I thought, really, now?!And then he started saying stuff and getting down on the ground and I was pulling him up because I was thinking what the hell is he doing down there and then I realised and he asked me and started fiddling in his pocket for something and I asked him (which he won't let drop now by the way) what have you in your pocket and he was like "will you answer me first!!!" and then he took out a cotton wool ball and I was thinking what the hell is this but inside he had 2 emeralds 1 sapphire and 2 rubies that he'd got from some African mine (I know, I don't know how and when he did any of this or if it was even legal!) and said I could pick one to make into a ring or he'd get me one I liked when I got home! And, that’s what we did. I still have the gem stones and we chose the most beautiful ring back in Malaysia. And the rest, as they say, is history! It's been the most amazing year, from such an unexpected and romantic engagement, all the way up to now as we prepare to get hitched!
